Recognizing Local Coordinators
2011 Hall of Fame Inductees
Dina Berg
Region: South Carolina
Years in Services: 3+ Years
How Dina builds strong relationship with students and host families...
"I really enjoy getting to know each student and each host family - we all have a common interest! I have a lot of parties/get-togethers at my house July - October so everyone has a chance to come over and get to know everyone else in the group. We are our own little "AYA" family and everyone seems to get along perfectly - all of the families support each other and help each other ALL the time! We are together on the weekends doing things all the time!!"
Laurie Jacobsen
Region: Missouri
Years in Services: 2+ Years
One of Laurie's most successful community service projects:
Last year a group of four girls sewed 12 dresses in one day for the Little Dresses for Africa Project that PBS personality Nancy Zieman sponsors. It was a Global Youth Service Project. All four girls had been enrolled in a fashion design class at Oak Park High School and were eager to test their skills. With borrowed sewing machines, a little help from their LC and some Oreo cookies and tea it was fun and productive
day.
Nancy Stubbs
Region: Iowa
Years in Services: 5 Years
Two of Nancy's top cultural activities:
Trips to the Park or Mall - My students do a survey of languages being spoken around them by others who visit those venues. Sometimes
my students strike up conversations with foreign people and they learn
much about the diversity of America. The students are always thrilled
with these trips and can not stop talking about them!
Horseback Riding - Every year I take my students horse back riding and they learn about Free Market
Economy. Anne, who owns the horse farm, was a HS exchange student to Finland in the 1970's and learned to ride horses English style while there.

Brenda Danielowicz
Written by Michael Falvey
You might find me saying that our Local Coordinators are the pulse of AYA. We look to all of you to breathe life into our program as you speak with your potential host families, schools, and communities. The pulse of course comes from your heart that you put into finding wonderful homes for our students and the breath represents your spirit which helps to carry it from year to year.
With that said I would like to give a big thank you to Brenda Danielowicz who while working with AYA for just a couple of years has shown great patience and compassion for everything that comes with the responsibilities of being a local coordinator. She has a very kind way about her that I have no doubt comes through while working with her area. She does a great job communicating with our offices, families and schools while working on finding wonderful homes for our students and is a team player who is always willing to help. Lets all congratulate Brenda who I look forward to meeting in Florence Italy.
Student Choice Awards… LC of the Month Raffle!
AYA gives its students the opportunity to nominate their LC at any time during their program for recognition and reward as LC of the Month. Students email AYA with their heartwarming nominations, including some wonderful stories about the great things LCs do, the ways LCs make them feel special, and activities they enjoyed. A committee from AYA reviews the submissions each month and selects one winner each month who receives a $50 gift card and mention here on the AYA website.
In June 2011, AYA pooled the names of all LCs of the Month for 2010-11 in a raffle to receive an American Express gift card valued at $500. The winner selected at random was Sue Schriever of Nebraska! Congratulations Susan. Many thanks to all the LCs of the Month and to the many more who do amazing work with AYA students!

Cornelia Brown
My Local Coordinator Cornelia Brown is doing a lot for me and the other students in her area. She already helped me with a few problems and is also doing a lot of things with our exchange group of 2 guys from Korea, 2 from China, 1 from Brazil and me. I am so happy to have her as my Local Coordinator. She always knows how to react to the situation. She helped me when I was homesick: she gave me a tip to do a lot of activities with my friends, and she brought me to her church Youth Club to forget a bit of my homesickness. I really want to thank you that you gave me Cornelia Brown as my Local Coordinator.

Marilyn Murchie
Marilyn Murchie is a very good Local Coordinator. She is very special, caring, humble and polite. Before coming to the USA Marilyn replied to my email and welcomed me. Whenever we meet with Marilyn she always asks us, are we having any problem, and tells us to take care and call her or e-mail her whenever we have any difficulty. She listens and helps me a lot in every matter. In Islam there is a festival after the holy month of Ramadan called Eid. She helped us celebrate and introduce our culture to the community. She also calls our host families and asks about us from them. Marilyn is a very good coordinator. We all love her very much!

Anita Sanesac
Join us in congratulating Laurie Jacobsen, AYA’s LC of the Month for May! Her student Anastasia from Moldova writes:
Laurie Jacobsen is a great leader, an awesome person, and a very good friend. I love her because she is a person you can tell everything to, and not be embarrassed about it - she will always listen to you, and help you! Laurie is there for us 24/7. She is always fun to be around, and I know that she cares about every exchange student she has. She comes to activities, competitions, takes pictures, talks with us, and cheers for us. She hosts, so she understands our thoughts and problems. We also have a lot of activities together, like going to the amusement park, museums, haunted houses, skiing, skating and a lot more. We have activities with my Local Coordinator and another LC, so we have a huge group of exchange students, and we have so much fun together!
I love all those activities, they are always interesting and exciting. I'm very thankful that there are people like Local Coordinators, AYA and AIFS that do so much for us, find great families, are always ready to help, and do all these fun activities with us!
April 2011
Anita Sanesac
Congratulations to Anita Senesac of Indiana, AYA's April LC of the Month! Anita's student Daria from Germany writes,
"In early April I went on a Spring Break trip to Ohio with Anita and other exchange students. She organized the trip very well and booked tickets for interesting museums and a baseball game. I enjoyed the trip a lot and look forward to the next activities she plans every month. Apart from that she really cares about us. She is a good LC and I hope that she continues her awesome work!"
March 2011
Nancy Stubbs
Congratulations to Nancy Stubbs of Iowa, AYA's March LC of the Month! Nancy's student Igor from Ukraine writes,
"I have a lot of support from my host family, but only one person from the US can be my second mum - my Local Coordinator, Nancy Stubbs! She is a mother not only for her own kids but for her exchange students! She is not a superhero with special powers but she is a superhero with a huge heart, love, understanding, care, leadership and peace! Every month she’s making sure we are OK and enjoying USA 100%, and gathers us all together! And every time our meeting is over I cannot wait for the next one! No matter what plans she has, how busy she is, how tired she is, what time it is – she is ready to help to support her kids...
If someone asked me if I miss my mum and her support, I would say "not really" - not because I don’t love my mum but because I have my mum here in Iowa… She is that person I will never forget!"
February 2011
Debi Hardee
Congratulations to Debi Hardee of Florida, LC of the Month for February! Debi’s student Kathrin from Germany writes,
"I'm having a wonderful year with nice friends and a really fun host family. My LC Debi works really hard and we have a lot of meetings, parties, and sleepovers. For example in the summer we had a pool party at one of the host parents’ house and we went boating and waterskiing. Another time we had a girls’ sleepover, a bonfire, and did makeovers... She is really nice and helpful and always good to talk to. She also has two foreign exchange students. It is a lot of fun and it is really cool that while I'm in America, I can also make friends with people from Brazil, China and Germany. I hope she'll become Local Coordinator of the month because she deserves it."
January 2011
Deb Cadigan
Congratulations to Deb Cadigan of Maine, LC of the Month for January! AYA student Carina from Germany nominated Deb:
"I wanted to let you know that Deborah Cadigan is a great Local Coordinator. Last weekend, the exchange students slept over at her house and we had so much fun watching movies and just talking about our experience. One time, just before Christmas, she brought us all shopping and we helped out in a soup kitchen. We also went hiking and on a trip to a corn maze. She takes her 'job' very seriously and just does it great. I like how she gives us the opportunity to meet the other exchange students, too, so I didn't only learn about the American culture, but also about other cultures. Thanks to AYA for this experience."

Jennifer Janecek
Written by Charli Garcia
As all of our hardworking LCs know it takes quite a bit of patience and dedication to
ensure our students and host families receive the best service and support throughout
the academic exchange year. These are skills that many LCs develop and improve
as time goes on. I am happy to announce that Jennifer Janecek is our LC of
the Quarter!
Jennifer’s first placement year with AYA was last year for the 2009-2010
students. Jennifer was a host parent who was asked to join our team as an LC due
to living in a community that had a high volume of interested host families with
no active LCs to assist. She immediately impressed us with her support and attention to student needs, active involvement with her community school meetings and exchange regulations, and last but not least…impeccable compliance! She communicates regularly with her RD, handles any and all issues objectively and always represents us in a professional manner. Jennifer continues to do an exemplary job with student supervision and actively seeks out new host families and permanent families for students who arrived to welcome homes. Thank you Jenn for all of your hard work this year! It is greatly appreciated and AYA is thrilled to have you as part of our team.
LC of the Quarter
Mary Payne Hairald
Written by Daniel Matena
AYA is pleased to announce that Mary Payne Hairald from Mississippi has been selected as our newest LC of the Quarter! Her wonderful personality, coupled with her keen sense of generosity and general love for life has been contagious and has earned her the nomination. It is not only her caring personality that we all appreciate, but her devotion and sincere desire to help others in need. On numerous occasions, Mary has stepped forward from all corners of the globe, literally, to help find great families and schools for a large number of our students who were looking for a new home. Whether it is placing a student from her hotel room in Germany, to finding a wonderful home while on the road in New York, Mary really showed the true spirit and passion that drives our organization!
Mary's go-getter attitude has been inspired by her strong conviction that our students need to be in a positive environment; in turn this changes lives and broadens our perpsective on global relations. Whenever a student has needed a home this year, Mary is always one of the first to see how and where she can help out. Thank you Mary for going above and beyond!
LC of the Quarter
Marilyn Murchie
Written by Lisa Deberadinis
It is hard to believe that Marilyn Murchie has been a LC with AYA for only 3 years, it seems like she has been doing this her whole life. Marilyn embodies what a Local Coordinator should be. Marilyn’s commitment to her students and her dedication to the mission of the program is remarkable. Marilyn finds top quality homes for all her students and puts a great deal of effort into matching the right student for the right host family. Her paperwork is always complete, organized and provided to AYA immediately upon completion. Most notably however, is Marilyn’s approach to supervision, it is exemplary. She works patiently through a student’s issues throughout the year. She is unbiased and is a mediator between the host family and the student. She listens to both concerns and works towards a solution that both sides can be happy with. Marilyn’s efforts are notable and well worth it for she has never had a student move out of her community and has few rematches throughout the year. Marilyn is also an accomplished Grant LC, her and her husband RC place a large cluster of grant students each year. They plan incredible enhancement activities, engage their students in volunteer opportunities and always manage to provide thorough documentation for each event.
What we love most about Marilyn, and perhaps the reason she is such an outstanding LC is her kind and positive attitude. She works toward success and motivates her students to do the same. We are honored to work with Marilyn Murchie and are grateful to her dedication to our students and quality of our program;. She was recognized at the 2009 National Meeting LC Hall of Fame, which is an honor that she certainly deserves. Marilyn thank you for all that you do!
LC of the Quarter
Sheila Green
Nominated by Kira Greenwood
Sheila Green has been chosen for as LC of the Quarter! Sheila's dedication to her exchange students is truly something to be admired. She shows her dedication through the activities she plans for her students, host families, and communities. She holds her own orientation for her students upon their arrival to Missouri to elaborate upon what to anticipate with their host families and all of the unique features of the area. She takes her students to local attractions, big cities, and even a few professional sport games!
One of Sheila's most valuable qualities is her commitment to all of her students that they have a successful year here in the United States. She recognizes the opportunity that each host family and student has to experience other cultures in such a special way. Her facilitation of culture understanding allows students to return to their home countries with not only a broader understanding of the United States, but also of themselves.
Thank you Sheila for all of your hard work! Congratulations!
LC of the Quarter
Shirley Jackson, New Jersey
Nominated by Alisha Collins
Here at Academic Year in America, we pride ourselves on the quality of service that we provide to our overseas partners, our students and our volunteer host families. In order for us to extend our services to both our students and host families, we rely heavily on our Local Coordinators. Our Local Coordinators are so vital to our mission of cultural exchange as they are the face of AYA in their local communities and they are an integral part of the placement and supervision process for our exchange students. As expected, our Local Coordinators follow an important list of guidelines when placing and supervising students, but it is those LC’s that go above and beyond that make this program so successful. I am proud to announce the LC of the Quarter, Shirley Jackson of New Jersey for her efforts beyond what is expected.
Shirley Jackson has placed numerous students over the years for AYA and in my short time as her Regional Director, she has been one of my LC’s that I can reach out to, for just about anything. Shirley’s passion for cultural exchange is infectious throughout her community and she has built flourishing relationships with host families and school administration in order to carry out our mission. Not only does she form relationships with her families and schools, she builds life long relationships with both the students she’s placed and hosted. Her exchange student Nina, 1997 states: "I was an exchange student in 1997 and was so fortunate for having Shirl Jackson as my local coordinator. She was more than that, she was my friend, my NJMom, my angel - and still is! Since then we became family and I just have to thank God daily for having such a special person in my life!" Shirley’s commitment to AYA and its mission are appreciated and we can’t thank her enough for all her hard work.

coordinator for LifeSavers Therapeutic Riding
Center, Carly gave the kids horseback riding class.
She also needs volunteers, so she spoke with the
families and students about the organization."
Stacey Dorsett
Region: North Carolina
Years in Services: 3+ Years
Stacey Quotables:
"In my 3 years as a Local Coordinator, the most important thing that I
have learned is to be appreciative. I make sure that either I am at the
airport (or I have a friend/long time exchange family) meet my families
at the airport when our students arrive. As soon as the families get
in the car to leave..I send them a quick text thanking them for opening
up their homes to one of my students and reminding them that I am
available 24/7..."
Debi Hardee
Region: Florida
Years in Services: 4+ Years
On building strong relationships with students and host families:
"I have a meeting with the families prior to the arrival of the
students. At this time they have an opportunity to share fears,
questions and get to know each other. Once the student
arrives I go to the home and meet with the student to make
sure they are ok with the trip here and the family they are with."

Region: Indiana

Anita Quotables - On cultural activities:
"We took a trip that revolved around the theme of Abraham Lincoln. We started out in our city of Fort Wayne, Indiana by visiting the Lincoln Museum. This is a very hands on museum and since many of the students take U.S. History, it helped bring to life some of the things they learned in class. We then traveled to
both Kentucky and Illinois to visit the childhood home of Lincoln and to retrace the route he took when he traveled by train during the year of his election. The students were also able to visit the place where he stood to make his famous
Emancipation speech."
Christine Gaffner
Region: Indiana
Years in Services: 4+ Years
Christine Quotables:
"Working with the youth of the world in the AYA, FLEX, and YES
Programs has opened eyes all around my region to the fact that we
are not the only ones in the world. People in my area, schools, and
even my own home have a wider outlook on what is going on in the
world today."
Marilyn Murchie
Region: Montana
Years in Services: 2+ Years
Marilyn Quotables:
"The most rewarding community and volunteer service for my students has been spending time with the elderly at the assisted living and nursing homes. Though it was somewhat difficult for some, because they had not experienced being around elderly people before, the students found it to be rewarding as they received expressions of appreciation for doing a variety of things with them such
as putting nail polish on the ladies' nails, reading them stories, going for walks, helping them with their meals, sharing with them about their countries, and just being their offering them friendship, kind words and smiles."
Sheri Schuster
Region: Idaho
Years in Services: 8+ Years
Sheri Quotables:
"I always try to be involved in both the Host families and students lives. This can mean supporting them in sports activities, family events or just being a shoulder
to lean on when they need encouragement. I always try to give them 100%. I have also tried to be a big part of the Orientations we have for all the students. I
have always tried to be a supportive Local Coordinator and friend to all my Regional directors and also the AYA Staff."
Tony Barnett
Region: Washington State
Years in Services: 5+ Years
Tony Quotables - On being inducted:
"I've become known in my area as a person who runs a premiere program and I am starting to get people calling me wanting to be a part of our program. Students and families always comment on how they appreciate the ongoing support and availability and the many activities that we provide for our students and families to
participate in."
